Sunseap Group said today that it has redesigned the career path of solar technologists employed by Sunseap in order to attract more Singaporeans to enter the renewable energy industry.

Mr Frank Phuan, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sunseap, said: "As Singapore ramps up efforts to tap on renewable energy to meet our power needs, we anticipate an increase in the number of jobs in the renewable energy industry in the coming years. We hope to do more to attract Singaporeans into this industry."

"To this end, Sunseap has worked with various government agencies to redesign the job scope for a solar technologist and to raise productivity through upskilling so that Singaporeans can see a rewarding career path ahead, both professionally and financially."

Last year, many of Sunseap's Singaporean employees rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to work on its floating solar platform in the Straits of Johor when foreign workers had to stay in their dormitories or were unable to return to Singapore due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The esprit de corps shown helped Sunseap to complete the construction of the solar platform despite facing disruptions during the lockdown.

Sunseap said it has worked with the Employment and Employability Institute and the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore to redesign the solar technologist role, which is expected to lead to better job progression, higher skills learning and certification, higher productivity and pay. Junior solar technologists are responsible for installation, testing and commissioning of the solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, while senior solar technologists are expected to design the solar PV systems, plan, execute, track and govern projects, among other responsibilities.

The redesign also includes multiple pathways for Singaporeans to enter the industry, widening the pool of potential recruits from graduates from the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities, to people with years of experience in other industries.
