Every year, April 22nd marks the annual event known as Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Today, more than 193 countries around the globe celebrate Earth Day. In a way, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

On top of commemorating Earth Day, the month of April this year also marks Sunseap's 11th Anniversary since our incorporation. As we celebrate our 11th birthday, we look back at our sustainability journey thus far – our notable milestones, the evolution of our capabilities and services and what's instore for us in the coming years.

A Journey Of Many Firsts

As a company committed to bringing affordable clean energy to everyone, our journey has been marked by many firsts. With the team's ground-breaking innovations, Sunseap has set into motion Singapore's first grid-connected photovoltaic system and the nation's first utility-scale energy storage system, amongst other noteworthy milestones. Here are just a few achievements that Sunseap has secured over the years.

Land, Air & Sea: Sunseap's Solar Capabilities

With rapid technological advancements coupled with obstacles such as land scarcity, Sunseap's solar capabilities have also evolved with time to quell these challenges. Utilising technology that is resilient to harsh environments and temperatures, Sunseap has deployed solar installations on the land (ground-mounted solar), in the air (rooftop solar) and on the sea (floating solar).

In the last 11 years, Sunseap has also secured more than 2,000 MWp of solar projects to date, across 10 territories in Asia including Vietnam, China, Cambodia and Japan, amongst others. In 2021 alone, Sunseap's projects saved 117,354 metric tons of carbon in Singapore.

Looking Ahead – Towards A Greener Future Together

Following these momentous achievements, there are still many significant milestones to look forward to – namely shaping Singapore into a hub for energy interconnection. With this vision, Sunseap aims to promote and develop large cross-border projects to drive clean energy into Singapore and diversify Singapore's energy supply.

In 2021, Sunseap signed a Memorandum of Understanding with various local and international partners to explore and develop solar power systems with a combined capacity of 7 gigawatt-peak (GWp) around the Riau islands, including a 2.2GWp floating solar PV in Duriangkang, Batam. Through this arrangement, the combined generation capacity will be able to generate and transmit 1GW of non-intermittent clean energy for both Singapore and Indonesia, establishing both Singapore and Batam as a clean energy gateway and hub in ASEAN and paving the way towards an ASEAN Green Power Grid.

In the same year, Sunseap also formed a joint venture with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's largest electricity utility, to participate in a trial by Singapore to import electricity from Malaysia. The agreement will see Singapore importing 100MW of electricity to be generated from renewable energy sources.

We have also recently merged with EDP Renewables, one of the world's largest renewable energy producer. The merger includes a potential investment of up to S$10 billion by 2030 in renewable energy projects, establishing Sunseap as a leading clean energy hub based in Singapore, for the APAC region.

The coming year is shaping up to be a year of strong growth for the team at Sunseap – we are grateful for the support we have received thus far and we are excited for what's in store for us!
