According to released statistics, only 5% of homeowners in Singapore live in landed properties. This would mean that unless you own a building or live in a landed property in, most Singaporeans will not be able to install solar panels on the roofs of apartment blocks like the picture above. Would you still be able to go solar in this case? The answer is a resounding YES!

In this blog, we will share how a fully owned subsidiary of Sunseap Group, Sunseap Energy, has helped thousands of consumers go solar in sunny Singapore.

Who is Sunseap Energy?

'Sunseap Energy Pte Ltd,' is a fully owned subsidiary of Sunseap Group, and a licensed electricity retailer by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) in Singapore. As the electricity retail arm of Singapore's largest solar developer, Sunseap Energy is able to capitalize on this competitive advantage and sell locally produced solar energy to mass consumers, even if they do not own a solar system. This is a feat that is difficult to be accomplished on a large scale, unless you have a sizable portfolio of solar generation facilities in Singapore.

Sunseap Energy enable consumers to utilise solar energy generated from our portfolio of solar systems right in their homes or office spaces, without having to install a solar system. Not only will consumers be able to reduce their energy bills and enjoy affordable solar energy, they will also continue to enjoy the same grid reliability from Singapore's grid operator (SP Group).

How does this work? Introducing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)

Solar energy that is neither consumed by the facilities nor stored, is fed into the national electricity grid. This amount of solar energy that is exported, is tracked by a smart meter which sends data to SP Power Grid. As energy is intangible, clean energy is differentiated via the use of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), which serve as an accounting instrument that dictates the quantity of clean energy assets that we own. Every 1 MWh or 1,000 kWh of clean energy is equivalent to 1 REC.

When a consumer is on Sunseap's solar energy plan, Sunseap will retire the equivalent number of RECs according to the consumer's annual energy consumption, therefore consuming the RECs that Sunseap owns and rendering it as though it has been consumed by the consumer. This method is recognized by corporations and widely practiced throughout the industry. Sunseap has helped companies such as Apple, Microsoft and recently, Facebook, go solar via our locally produced solar energy for their operations in Singapore.

What makes Sunseap Energy's solar energy plans different?

Corporations prioritise reliability, accountability and transparency when they procure RECs to boost their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. One reason why many corporations have chosen to procure RECs from Sunseap is because we own most of the solar generation assets in Singapore that has contributed a substantial amount of locally produced RECs into the local grid. This gives corporations the assurance that they are procuring RECs from a reliable local source, rather than from somewhere overseas which might not be verified or audited properly.

Due to economics of scale, Sunseap has been able to offer solar energy plans for residential and commercial consumers at affordable rates. This has allowed consumers to go solar, save money and save the environment all at the same time!
